A Timeline of O.T.O. Succession After Crowley’s Death

For many years now there has been a great deal of confusion about the history of Ordo Templi Orientis after the death of Aleister Crowley. That confusion has frequently been deliberately compounded by various claimants to the Headship of the Order through the use of selective quotation, misquotation, misunderstanding, or simply out-and-out fraud. Remarkably rarely have claims been made with any proper supporting documentation, an omission that the following timeline will attempt to remedy.

I have concentrated here only on the period from 1941 to 1969, which contains the critical documents relating to the Crowley succession. I have built this timeline as much as possible directly from primary sources, and added my own commentary when necessary to point out significant passages, or to clarify important background details. I have also contributed a summary at the end giving my personal take on what the documents signify.

Disclaimer: I am currently a member of OTO, and have been for approximately 20 years.

Note on sources: I have attempted to verify all sources as closely as possible. Most material has been taken directly from the original manuscripts or copies with good provenance within the OTO archives. I have quoted the most important and contentious documents, and summarised some supporting materials.

I am indebted to Hymenaeus Beta, Bill Heidrick, Dr. Richard Kaczynski, Frank Kroener, Jon Randall, and Dionysus Rogers for their feedback and assistance.

Comments and additions are very welcome.

1941

Crowley-Karl Germer, Apr/May 1941:

Appointment of Germer as X° for the free German-speaking peoples and legate in USA.

[Crowley retained his position as X° for all English-speaking countries, but by appointing Germer his “legate” allowed Germer to act as his direct representative in the USA.]

Crowley-Germer, 18 July 1941:

Gives power of attorney to Germer & appoints him representative of OTO and A.’.A.’., answering only to Crowley.

Crowley-Germer, 24th November 1941:

Note that the O.T.O. will probably have to be completely reconstructed. The temper of the New Aeon seems unfavourable for Lodges, and the “Secrets” are unintelligible to anyone who has not made a long study of the system. At present there are really two sections; the rituals – up to Rose Croix; and the essays of instruction dealing with the one real secret. The ritual[s] corresponding with these were never written, except the Templar. So I rather expect that it will be up to you to devise some totally new method of communicating the real secret. This has, of course, been the actual procedure: I have simply used my judgement and spilt the beans to those whom I considered worthy. If the rituals, by some miracle, became widely worked, well. They are a splendid basis for the practical teaching.

1942

Crowley-Germer, 12th-14th March 1942:

I shall appoint you my successor as O.H.O. but on special terms. It is quite clear to me that a complete change in the structure of the Order, and in its methods, is necessary. The Secret is the basis, and you must select the proper people. You can take outsiders; but everyone who has anything to do with us at all must make a formal acceptance of AL and a formal renunciation of ideas denounced in AL 49-56, Cap. III. Then comes the New Social Order, on the lines laid down in the books LII, CI, CLXI, and CXCLV (See Equinox III. 1, pp 195–246) and same in Eqx. III.2 – this volume is not under my hand at the moment. The broad base of public association is the Gnostic Mass. I hope, before I die, to get this put on en grand tenue by trained screen artists, so as to have a “sealed pattern” for future reference. The other rituals will have to tail along as best they can. I feel doubtful whether the time will ever return when there is either need to use such methods, or leisure to cultivate them. Of course, the minor secrets in them have their special magical value, so that they will always maintain a certain use to certain types of mind. Also, the actual magical effect on the candidate may be of the greatest value to him, and the training and discipline are always useful. But as a means of propaganda they are absurdly slow, cumbersome and clumsy; the secrecy part of it is purely comic as long as there are any Gerald Yorkes in the world.

[Important points here:

  1. Germer is clearly made O.H.O. of O.T.O. after Crowley’s death
  2. New people should be initated to O.T.O. but must formally accept the Book of the Law
  3. New social order to be based on the O.T.O. constitutional documents
  4. Main public rite should be the Gnostic Mass
  5. The initiation rituals are slow as propaganda, but have special magical value, and as the previous letter states “are a splendid basis for the practical teaching”.

Here we can see precisely how Crowley wanted O.T.O. run after his death. The last line appears to anticipate problems of secrecy in the age of the Internet.]

Crowley diary entry, 13th March 1942:

Precis of letter to Saturnus 12-14 March re Will. All my property is now in OTO. Pearl’s Carey St claim to be made over to you as GTG now. Saturnus residuary legatee & my successor as OHO. Instructions to him how to act as such (1) Form nucleus of IX° (2) Social Order Eqx. III 1 & 2 (3) Gnostic Mass. How to choose his own successor.

[Crowley notes that he has made his Last Will & Testament wherein he deeds all his property to O.T.O. and instructs his lawyers that Germer is currently Grand Treasurer General and that he is to be Crowley’s successor as Outer Head of the Order after Crowley’s death.]

1943

Crowley initiates McMurtry to the IX° of O.T.O.

1944

Crowley-Grady McMurty, 21st November 1944:

`The Caliphate.’ You must realize that no matter how closely we see eye-to-eye on any objective subject, I have to think on totally different premises where the Order is concerned. One of the (startling few) commands given to me was this: `Trust not a stranger: fail not of an heir.’ This has been the very devil for me. Fr∴ [Saturnus] is, of course, the natural Caliph; but there are many details concerning the actual policy or working which hit his blind spots. In any case, he can only be a stopgap, because of his age; I have to look for his successor. It has been Hell; so many have come up with amazing promise, only to go on the rocks. … But — now here is where you have missed my point altogether — I do not think of you as lying on a grassy hillside with a lot of dear sweet lovely woolly lambs, capering to your flute! On the contrary. Your actual life, or `blooding,’ is the sort of initiation which I regard as the first essential for a Caliph. For — say 20 years hence the Outer Head of the Order must, among other things, have had the experience of war as it is in actual fact to-day.

[Note that “Caliph” is Arabic for “successor”, and when Crowley refers to “The Caliphate” he’s simply talking about the O.T.O. leadership succession after his death. He does not give McMurty the title of Caliph here – Crowley is simply stating that Karl Germer is his natural successor, but that he (Crowley) is also trying to look for Germer’s successor. Crowley explicitly mentions that he is worried about Germer’s age and that he can only be a stopgap solution; and that about 20 years down the line he envisions McMurtry as Germer’s possible successor as O.H.O.. A rather prescient observation – though it actually took 25 years.]

1945

Crowley diary entry, 7th February 1945:

“Feb.7. to Saturnus re financial policy of O.T.O.
(1) A.C.’s copyrights belong to O.T.O.  Each new book, or set of essays, or what not, is a direct gain to O.T.O.  To keep him alive & at work, with secretarial help, must be the first charge on the Funds whether labelled “Publication Fund” or otherwise.
(2) Value of Grant. If I die or go to U.S.A., there must be a trained man to take care of English O.T.O….” “

[Here Crowley makes plain that the copyrights on his work belong to O.T.O., and that the Publication Fund should be seen as an investment in this. Note that Crowley does not mention Grant as anything more than a possible caretaker of the English branch of O.T.O. There’s no hint of any authority beyond that. Compare this to the authority he had already given to Karl Germer in 1942, and his letter to McMurtry in 1944 where he mentions him as a possible successor after Germer. Grant is rarely mentioned in the 1946 diary and not at all in the 1947 diary, presumably because he and Crowley had fallen out by then.]

McMurtry diary entry, 16th June 1945:

We [Aleister Crowley & himself] were discussing his problems one afternoon which were mostly those of Agape Lodge in Los Angeles. At which time I said, ‘Since you know me, and I know them, when I get home, (i.e. California) I will take a look at the situation and write you a report.’ Whereupon he said, ‘Fine. I hereby appoint you Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Order.’ This is the only commission I have from Crowley that was purely verbal and for which I have no documents since Crowley did not provide me one at the time.

1946

Crowley-McMurtry, March 22 1946:

This is authorize Frater Hymenaeus A (Capt. Grady L Mc Murty) to take charge of the whole of the order in California. To reform the organisation in pursuence of his report of Jan 25, ’46 e.v. subject to the approval of Frater Saturnus (Karl J Germer) . This authorization is to be used only in emergency. Love is the law etc.  Baphomet. OHO.
[The report mentioned was McMurtry’s report on Agape Lodge in California, which McMurtry undertook in his capacity as Sovereign Grand Inspector General mentioned above. Crowley was very pleased with the report and gave McMurtry corresponding authority to try to fix the problems mentioned in it. Note that the authority given here is for use in an emergency only – presumably this was in case Agape Lodge could not fix their problems themselves. Since some time later Agape Lodge did in fact begin to fall apart, and Germer died without being able to fix it, I think that could reasonably be considered an “emergency” by the terms set out above.]

Crowley-McMurtry, April 11 1946:

These are to appoint Frater Hymeneaus A. Grady Louis McMurty IXth° O.T.O. as Our personal representative in the United States of America, and his authority is to be considered as Ours, subject to the approval, revision, or veto of our Viceroy Karl Johannes Germer IX° O.T.O. of 260 West 72 St New York

[A much wider authority then the preceding one. Crowley here explicitly names McMurtry as a IX° member, and gives him full authority to represent Crowley across the whole of the USA, as long as Germer doesn’t have a problem with it. The mention of both Germer and McMurtry as IX° members shows that Crowley is referring to giving McMurtry authority specifically within the context of O.T.O. Note that unlike the previous authorisation this one is not conditional on an emergency situation occurring – it is fully active as long as Germer does not object. It is the only time that Crowley gives his full authority to any other O.T.O. member and it is never rescinded either by him or Germer. Thus after the death of both Crowley & Germer, McMurtry becomes the only person in the Order holding official leadership credentials.]

Germer-McMurtry, 24 May 1946:

…with any steps you decide to be taken with my approval. Let us cooperate fully.

[Germer does not object to McMurty’s commission, and states his desire to work with him as Crowley wants.]

Crowley-Germer, June 19 1946:

The only limitation on his [McMurtry’s] power in California is that any decision which he takes is subject to revision or veto by yourself

[Note that here Crowley removes the “approval” clause, so that McMurtry has authority to work freely unless Germer specifically objects.]

Germer-McMurtry, 7 August 1946:

I am holding the two documents you sent me; I see no reason why you should not show them to Roy [Leffingwell] and whoever is entitled to see them.
[Germer shows his recognition of the authority Crowley has given to McMurtry, and his approval for the use of both documents.]

1947

Crowley-Gerald Gardner, May 1947:

Do what thou wilt shall be the law

We Baphomet X° Ordo Templi Orientis Sovereign Grand Master General of all English Speaking Countries of the Earth do hereby Authorise our beloved son Scire, (Dr. G.B. Gardner,) Prince of Jerusalem, to constitute a camp of the Ordo Templi Orientis in the degree of Minerval

Love is the law, Love under Will

Witness my hand and seal,

Baphomet X°

Crowley-W.B. Crow, 30th May 1947:

I suggest that you refer all your following in the London district to Dr.Gardner so that he may put them properly through the Minerval degree, and some of them at least might help him establish the camps for the higher degrees up to Perfect Initiate or Prince of Jerusalem.

Crowley-Germer, 6th June 1947:

You seem in doubt too about the succession. There has never been any question about this. Since your re-appearance You are the only successor of whom I have ever thought since that moment. I have, however, had the idea that in view of the dispersion of so many members, you might find it useful to appoint a triumvirate to work under you. My idea was Mellinger, MacMurtrie and, I suppose, Roy, though I have always been a little doubtful about the trustworthiness of the last. […] I shall leave it entirely to you to decide about your triumvirate after my death.

Gardner-Crowley, 14 June 1947:

Gardner pays Crowley 10/10 to affiliate up to VII° membership in the Order.

Crowley-McMurtry, 17th June 1947:

It seems a long while since I heard from you. This is a great mistake: I will tell you why in strict confidence. In the event of my death, Frater Saturnus is of course my successor, but after his death the terrible burden of responsibility might very easily fall upon your shoulders: for this reason I should like you to keep closely in touch with me.

Crowley’s Last Will & Testament, 19th June 1947:

“THIS IS THE LAST WILL of me EDWARD ALEXANDER CROWLEY commonly known as Aleister Crowley of “Netherwood” The Ridge Hastings Sussex England
I HEREBY REVOKE all wills and testamentary dispositions at any time heretofore made by me
I DIRECT that my executors shall ascertain as they may think fit beyond all possibility of error the fact of my death
I DESIRE that on my decease my body shall be cremated and that my ashes should be preserved in a casket together with my seal ring and entrusted to the Grand Treasurer of the Ordo Templi Orientis
I APPOINT Karl Johannes Germer of 260 West 72nd Street New York City, Lady Frieda Harris the wife of Sir Percy Harris of 3 Devonshire Terrace Marylebone High Street London W.1. and Louis Umfraville Wilkinson, Doctor of Letters whose address is care of Westminster Bank Limited Shaftesbury Avenue London W.C.1. to be the Executors of this my will (hereinafter referred to as my Executors) except for the purposes property and effect (including copyrights) of and in connection with my profession of an author for which purposes property and effects
I APPOINT the said Louis Unfraville Wilkinson and John Symonds of 121 Delside Road London W.C.3. the executors hereof (hereinafter referred to as “my literary executors”)
I DIRECT my literary Executors to collect as soon as practicable after my death all my books, writings and effects of a literary nature whatsoever and wheresoever including all such effects over which I may at the date of my death have any power of disposition or appointment and
I GIVE AND BEQUEATH my books and writings and literary effects so collected to my literary Executors free of all death duties ON TRUST that they shall hand the same to the Grand Treasurer General of the Ordo Templi Orientis (Order of the Temple of the East) at 260 West 72nd Street New York City with a request that the collection shall be for the absolute use and benefit of said Order and
I DECLARE that the receipt of the Grand Treasurer General of the said Order shall be a sufficient discharge to my literary Executors subject to the payment of my debts and funerary and testamentary expenses
I GIVE DEVISE BEQUEATH AND APPOINT all the rest residue and remainder of my property estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever unto such of the said Karl Johannes Germer, Lady Frieda Harris and Louis Unfraville Wilkinson as shall be living at the date of my death and if more than one equally between them for their or his or her absolute benefit but with a request that they he or she will dispose of the same amongst my faithful friends in accordance with any wishes expressed by me during my lifetime or set out in any memorandum written or signed by me or left amongst my papers at my death but I declare that no such memorandum shall be deemed to form part of my Will nor shall the foregoing expression of my wishes create any trust or legal obligation.

IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand this nineteenth day of June one thousand nine hundred and forty-seven.

[The important part for O.T.O. here is the section dealing with his literary effects: “I GIVE AND BEQUEATH my books and writings and literary effects to the Grand Treasurer General of the Ordo Templi Orientis …for the absolute use and benefit of said Order”. It is clear that he wants all of his literary effects (which would include copyrights) to go to O.T.O. and specifically names Germer’s address as where they should be sent.]

Crowley-Germer, 30 June 1947:

England in particular is beginning to look up very brightly: we are getting a Camp of Minerval started during the summer if plans go as at present arranged.

[This was the proposed Camp under the leadership of Gardner.]

Crowley-Frederic Mellinger, 15th July 1947:

I am very anxious indeed that you should keep in close touch with me, if only because I think it quite possible that after Frater Saturnus and myself have moved on to the next stage, you may find yourself saddled with the whole responsibility of carrying on the work of the Order.

[It seems clear from these letters throughout June-July that Crowley knew his death was approaching and was trying to ensure that a proper succession would happen in O.T.O. – with Germer as Head, and McMurtry and Mellinger as backups in case of emergency.]

Frieda Harris-Mellinger, 7 December 1947:

Are you head of the Order here or was Gardner? I can’t find him, I fancy he died?

[Gardner was alive but very sick and staying in America. No mention of Grant as possible leader in England. She assumes that Mellinger and Gardner are the ranking officers in Europe.]

Gerald Gardner-Vernon Symonds, 24th December 1947

Alister gave me a charter making me head of the O.T.O. in Europe. Now I want to get any papers about this, that Alister had, he had some typescript Rituals. I know. I have them too, but I don’t want his to fall in to other peoples hands, I’ll buy them off the Executors at a reasonable price, together with any other relics they may be willing to sell.

[Note that Gardner was not the highest Degree member in Europe, or even in England, however he was the only person at that time with a Charter to actually initiate new members into the Order.]

1948

Harris-Germer, 2 Jan 1948:

I think I am a member of the O.T.O.

I used to get the Word of the Equinox.

G.B.Gardiner, 282 Strathmoore Circle Memphis 12 Tenn. is head of the O.T.O. in Europe – Dr. W.B.Crow, 227 Glenfield Road Western Park Leicester has authority from A.C. to work the O.T.O. & the Gnostic Catholic Church. Would you write to him. also Noel Fitzgerald 24 Belsize Road N.W6. seems to have been asked to initiate Mr. Gardiner & may be a member.

Germer-Grant, 5th Oct 1948:

Germer sends Grant his IX° initiation certificate and paperwork, and it is countersigned by Gerald Yorke.

[Note that this means that Grant did not formally receive his IX° until after Crowley’s death.]

1950

Gardner-John Symonds, December 1950:

I tried to start an order, but I got ill and had to leave the country. After his [Crowley’s] death, word was sent to Germer that I was head of the Order in Europe, and Germer acknowledged me as such, but owing to ill health I so far haven’t been able to get anything going. I’ve had some people interested, but some of them were sent to Germany with the army of occupation, and others lived far away, and so nothing happened. Actually, I haven’t all the rituals. The K.T. ritual has been lost; Gerald Yorke thinks it may never have been written. I have up to Prince of Jerusalem. You don’t know about the lost degrees, I suppose?

[Gardner appears to be referring to Harris’ letter to Germer in 1948. There’s no reason to doubt Gardner’s claim that Germer acknowledged him as running O.T.O. in Europe. Note that this goes both ways – Gardner also implicitly acknowledges that Germer is his superior and thus Head of O.T.O. internationally. The reference to people in Germany probably means Mellinger, who with working with the army of occupation as a translator and interrogator – I assume Germer had informed Gardner of Mellinger’s whereabouts by that time. ]

1951

Germer-Grant, 5th March 1951:

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

On the strength of the power vested in me by BAPHOMET, the late O.H.O. of the ORDO TEMPLI ORIENTIS, I hereby grant Fra. AOSSIC IX° O.T.O. (KENNETH GRANT) to constitute a camp of the above-named Order in the valley of London, England.

Love is the law, love under will.

Saturnus X° O.T.O.

New York, N.Y.

March 5, 1951

[Since Gardner is by now admitting he’s done nothing with O.T.O. in Europe, it seems that Germer is looking for alternatives, chartering Grant in the UK. By running the Camp Grant implicitly accepts Germer’s authority as having international authority over O.T.O. –  otherwise the Charter would be meaningless.]

Grant-Cecil Williamson, 16th May 1951

Your letter is rather startling. I shall have to clarify my position. I have nothing whatever to do with the G.D., neither do I want anything to do with it. I am authorized to operate the O.T.O. in England; this has nothing whatsoever to do with the G.D. – it is a totally different organisation with totally different aims.

Grant-Williamson, 25th June 1951

Many thanks for yours of the 22nd. It is very kind of you to offer to help us with regard to the O.T.O. What would really be of immense help in this direction is the printing of the enclosed Manifesto. Do you think you could do this for me? I am enclosing a copy of the O.T.O. sigil which should appear at the head of the Manifesto – in red or green, if possible. But please do not in any way add or subtract from what is written, either in regard to words or signs, as I am responsible to my own Superior in the Order for what appears under its Seal and in its Name.

…In this light must the Order be regarded by any who are willing seriously to consider its principles and its aims. I do not know what Dr. G. has said on the subject, but I must remind you that I am very exact in matters of occultism and would not make any statement I could not substantiate either historically or magically, so you must believe me what I say that what I have written above is virtually true if not actually apparent.

[Grant acknowledges that he has a Superior in the Order, and considering that this exchange is just a couple of months after getting his Charter from Germer, it’s obvious that this is who he is referring to. Some may find the second paragraph rather ironic in hindsight.]

Germer-Mellinger, 25th September 1951:

…go ahead with the O.T.O. if you feel like it. His [Metzger] letter to you of Sept. 21 does not appear to take the bull by the horn, as he should. I would like the O.T.O. operative in Central Europe on our lines, not on those of Reuss.
[Again Germer appears to be looking for European alternatives now that Gardner has given up. Germer gives Mellinger authority to run O.T.O. in Central Europe.]

Germer-(Unknown Recipient), 25th September 1951:

I had given F. authority to initiate Lekve and the man from Switzerland into the O.T.O., and go as far as he sees fit.

Mellinger, 28th October 1951:

Mellinger initiates Hermann Metzger into the IX° of O.T.O. in Hamburg, certificate later signed by Karl Germer as O.H.O.

[Mellinger uses his authority under Germer to initiate Metzger. This shows that Metzger clearly accepted Mellinger’s authority to initiate him, and accepts Germer as Head of the Order.]

Mellinger-Germer, 31st October 1951:

Dear Karl,
93,
this will probably be my last message from Germany.

Everything is prepared to move on for a new cycle in a few days. From Friday last week to Monday, Metzger was here and we spent about 24 hours altogether in talking Thelema. The task was not at all difficult for me, but rather enjoyable, as M. turned out to be a sincere student, highly gifted and devoted to the New Law with full and genuine submission to its Logos. All the desires is to receive as much of the material as possible to study and pass on to his group the wisdom and knowledge offered in Master Therion’s work. I lent him for a start my copy of the Blue Equinox which he intends to have duplicated by microfilm. As he and his lodge are initiated into the I. to III. degree of the O.T.O. (Reuss version), I did not hesitate to promise him the corresponding manuscripts and asked him to get them from Lekve whom he was going to visit from here last Monday. He copied the application form I had used in Hildesheim, and is going to have it nicely printed at home and signed by his seventeen Brethren and send the applications on to you. He is eager to put on the Gnostic Mass and I promised him to assist him with a revision of the German translation which he is going to send us, and with all instructions available. He also wants to initiate his group ceremonially into the first three degrees of the “reformed” Order as soon as he will receive the authorization for that and will be prepared technically…

…Love is the law, love under will.

Yours ever
Frederic

[Mellinger is clearly working closely under Germer and accepts him as O.H.O. No-one in Metzger’s group were higher than III° up to this point. Mellinger will receive applications from the members of Metzger’s group to enter O.T.O. under Germer. After this letter Mellinger moved to Switzerland to oversee work with the Swiss Lodge directly. The reference to (Friedrich) Lekve and to Hildesheim (where Lekve lived – and was Mayor!) implies that Mellinger had already travelled to initiate Lekve to at least III° within the previous month per Germer’s instructions. Later claims that “there were no O.T.O. initiations under Germer” are thus clearly shown to be false.]

Germer’s Will, 4th December 1951:

I leave the whole of my property and possessions to my beloved wife Sascha Ernestine André-Germer as sole heir […] As regards the property of the Order Ordo Templi Orientis […] I direct that this is passed to the Heads of the Order […] my wife […] has to be the executor of this part of my Will, together with Frederic Mellinger.

Application of Anita Bogert, 3rd April 1953:

Anita Bogert applies for initiation into O.T.O. in Switzerland. Sponsors are Anne-Marie Eschbach & Hans Metzger. Germer approves the initiation as Xº on May 19th. This shows that the Swiss O.T.O. had continued to fully function under Germer’s authority since 1951, and that they did not in any way consider themselves independent of the rest of O.T.O. It also shows that Germer was not at all opposed to initiating new members as has been sometimes suggested.

Anita Bogert Application Form

Kenneth Grant – Manifesto of the New Isis Lodge:

…New Isis Lodge is in accord with the Master Therion (a Past Grand Master of O.T.O.); with the present Master S., who is World-Head of the O.T.O. in the Outer, and who operates in the United States of America;…

[The “Master S.” presumably refers to Saturnus, the motto of Karl Germer. This phrase appears to invalidate Grant’s later claim that he never accepted Germer as the international Head of O.T.O.]

Germer-Grant, 20th July 1955:

To Mr. Kenneth Grant

NOTIFICATION OF EXPULSION

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

You are notified that the very small and limited authority I gave you at one time to establish a Camp of O.T.O. in the valley of London is withdrawn, and I formally expel you from membership in the Ordo Templi Orientis. You have grossly abused the trust that was placed in you. By printing and distributing a so-called “Manifesto” without my approval, and behind my back, you have shown lack of the sense of decency and for due authority.

By making false and misleading statements therein, printing outright lies, and generally sailing under false pretenses, you have shown moral and spiritual dishonesty and proved yourself utterly unworthy for leadership in a cause that is even slightly connected with an Order like the O.T.O., much less than with a cause like the Law of Thelema.

Love is the law, love under will.

Karl Germer X° and Frater Superior O.T.O.

Germer-Noel Fitzgerald, 20th July 1955:

Hampton N.J.

P.O.Box 581

December 16, 1955

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.It has been reported to me that there are people in Great Britain who are operating in the name of the O.T.O. — ORDO TEMPLI ORIENTIS –. The sole authority for the English-speaking countries rests in the present Frater Superior of the O.T.O., Frater Saturnus, Karl Germer.

There is no one in Great Britain with a valid Charter of the O.T.O. in Great Britain, any activity under that title is therefore spurious.

I hereby appoint Mr. Noel Fitzgerald, London W.1. as my personal representative in matters of the O.T.O. for Great Britain – valid until revoked -; to report to me on any illegal claims or activities; meanwhile to take action as he deems advisable.

Karl Germer

Frater Superior O.T.O.

X° O.T.O.

[The language here is unambiguous. From this point on no-one in the U.K. holds a valid Charter to initiate new members or run a body of O.T.O. Noel Fitzgerald stays Germer’s representative until his death in 1958. At this time the only other O.T.O. members in the UK are Harris, Wilkinson, & Yorke, and after the deaths of the former all activity there ceases until the 1970s. Note that in both letters Germer clearly signs himself Frater Superior of O.T.O. making nonsense of some later claims that Germer never used said title.]

Karl Germer dies on October 25th, 1962.

[His wife does not inform either Mellinger or McMurty of the death, even though Mellinger is named as co-executor of Germer’s Will. She does not pass on the O.T.O.’s property, instead holding on to it. She writes to Metzger and Germer’s A.A. student, Marcelo Motta, telling each of them that it was Germer’s wish that they be Head of O.T.O. This despite the fact that Sascha Germer herself was never a member of O.T.O! From this misinformation much confusion flows over the next decade.]

1963

[Metzger unilaterally attempts to proclaim himself O.H.O., in January, despite Mellinger being his initiator and the highest ranking O.T.O member in Europe, and despite there being several other IX° members active in the U.S.A. Mellinger finds out about it in September of this year when he gets a letter from Mrs. Germer’s lawyers.]

Mellinger-Gard Chisholm, 25th September 1963:

Dear Mr. Chisholm,

I received your letter of September 20, 1963, enclosing a copy of the Petition for Probate of Will in the above matter which Mrs. Germer intends to sign and file. You are asking for my criticism of the petition. Here it is:

For the following reasons, I must object to the statement in the petition: “The will was executed in all particulars…”

1) as you know, the Will states (regarding the property of the Order Ordo Templi Orientis) “that this is passed to the Heads of the Order” and that “Frederic Mellinger act as co-executioner {sic, the will states “executor”} of this part of the Will”.

2) Mrs.Germer decided – without asking for my opinion in this important matter pertaining to “this part of the Will”, nor contacting me at all – to accept Herr Metzger’s strange “Manifesto” (printed this spring) as gospel truth and to recognise him as “Grand Master X° of the Order and Sovereign Grand Master General”(sic!). Neither Mrs. Germer, nor Herr Metzger (who for the last six years had regularly treated me with mailing me his pamphlets, which shows that he well knew my address) notified me before March 28th 1963 of Karl Germer’s death (on October 25th, 1963) [sic, should be 1962], nor his sham “election” on Jan 6th 1963. My questions regarding Metzger’s authority to assume the above titles and his right to call a “convocation of Prince Patriarchs” to the village of Stein, Switzerland, for his “election” were never answered by either Mrs.Germer nor Metzger. Nor could I obtain an explanation about negotiations carried on between the two during the five months before they contacted me. They have thereby decidedly violated (and not “executed” as the Petition states) the Will of the deceased.

Karl Germer had never in his life met at all Herr Metzger. On June 25, 1951, he wrote me about M. having contacted him by letter, asked me “to advise that group”, and left it entirely to my judgment to give Metzger some instruction possibly leading “that young man” to some advancement in the Order.

Herr Metzger revealed to my mind – unintentionally, of course – wherefrom he derived the courage to claim the high office in the Order by a childish “coup d’etat”; namely, by printing on the front page of his sham “Manifesto” the following motto’s:

“To be or not to be, that is the question.” and “Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders,” that brave word of Martin Luther. – Thereby he pointed unwittingly to the only authority he has to show for his dictatorial aspirations: his inflated Ego. But Mrs. Germer was duly impressed, and slyly nodded her assent, ignoring the “holy” (as she stated) but apparently uncomfortable Will of her late husband re my role as co- executioner.{sic}

Yours very truly

{signed} (Dr. Frederic Mellinger)

1966

Grant-Symonds, (date unknown):

On the 5th March 1951, I obtained a Charter from the Outer Head of the Order (Frater Saturnus/Karl J. Germer)

[Note that here Grant specifically names Germer as Head of O.T.O. after Crowley’s death, and as being the source of Grant’s authority.]\

1969

McMurtry finally finds out about Germer’s death, nearly seven years after the event. Realising that O.T.O. now has no O.H.O. (as Crowley had foreseen might happen), he activates his letters of authorisation from Crowley and invites all surviving members of O.T.O. to work with him to rebuild the Order.

Summary

  • Karl Germer
    • Made IX° by Crowley in 1925, and X° in 1941
    • Received several clear authorisations from Crowley naming him his successor as Head of O.T.O.
    • Every active O.T.O. member worldwide accepted his authority in writing during the 1950s
    • Indisputably international Head of O.T.O. after Crowley’s death
  • Grady McMurty
    • Made IX° by Crowley in 1943
    • Received several letters from Crowley naming him as a possible successor to Germer
    • Received clear authorisation from Crowley to be his personal representative
    • Crowley’s authorisations were accepted by Germer as valid
    • Continued to work as Sovereign Grand Inspector General under Germer
  • Frederic Mellinger
    • Date of IX° unknown, but certainly held it under Crowley
    • Received letter from Crowley naming him as a possible successor to Germer
    • Ran O.T.O. in Central Europe under Germer’s authority, initiating up to the IX°
    • Specifically rejected Metzger’s claim to be O.H.O. after Germer’s death
  • Gerald Gardner
    • Was a VII° member under Crowley
    • Was chartered to run a Camp from 1947-1951
    • Tried to run O.T.O. in Europe after Crowley’s death, but gave up
  • Kenneth Grant
    • Crowley mentions him once in his diary as a possible caretaker for the O.T.O. in England
    • Received IX° from Germer after Crowley’s death
    • Ran a local body in London from 1951-1955, initiating up to III° under Germer
    • Expelled from O.T.O. by Germer
  • Hermann Metzger
    • Initiated to IX° by Mellinger under Germer’s authority
    • After Germer’s death claimed to be O.H.O. without contacting the other members of the Order outside Switzerland
    • His claim was dismissed by his immediate superior, Mellinger
  • Marcelo Motta
    • Claimed to be a member of O.T.O. but had no authorisation to act as an officer of any type

It appears from all this that McMurtry’s letters of authorisation are the only valid claim to succession as Head of O.T.O. that anyone has produced to this date. None of the other claims are backed up by any of the documentation that we have available. It is quite remarkable that there are been so many claims and counter-claims over the past four decades based on no evidence whatsover, and that many of these claims have actually been taken seriously.
